The REC understands how difficult being a parent can be, especially when you have to compromise your schedule for your little ones. At the Downtown REC Center, we offer child care as a free service with a family membership.
To use Kids Care, you must have either a family or single-parent family membership or purchase a family day pass. Only parents and guardians of the children who attend Kids Care are able to utilize it. Grandchildren, daycare kids, friends' kids, or any other children who are not legally your own are not allowed. The Executive Director must approve any exceptions of the REC; Kids Care staff cannot approve special circumstances.
Parents and guardians must fill out a Kids Care Information and Consent form the first time using Kids Care. Parents are responsible for reporting any changes like additions to the family or new allergies to the Kids Care staff so we can update your forms.
Kids Care will only accept children between 6 weeks and 9 years old. Older children may want to bring their own games or toys. Our child care is designed more for babies and young children, and even if they are the proper age, they may be too mature for Kids Care. We ask that the older kids not rough house and run around too much so we can keep our younger kids safe. You may be asked to keep your child with you if this becomes a problem.
All parents/guardians must sign in to their children when they arrive and sign out when they leave. Do not enter Kids Care unless there is a staff member present. When signing in, parents/guardians must write which area of the building or what class they will be at so our Kids Care staff can find you if needed. If you think your child may have trouble being left in Kids Care, you may take a pager so we can page you if needed. If someone other than the person who dropped off the child is going to pick them up, please inform the Kids Care staff.
A child may be in Kids Care for up to 2 hours and parents/guardians must remain inside the REC Center. Any person that refuses to abide by this policy can lose childcare privileges temporarily, or indefinitely if this problem continues.
Please notify the staff of any food allegories and medical conditions EACH TIME you drop off your child. Our Kids Care staff members are certified in CPR and basic first aid. No medications will be given by the staff and if a child is bleeding, a bandage with no ointment will be used and the parent will be notified.
Children cannot use Kids Care if they have tested positive for COVID or are showing symptoms of any other contagious illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, headache, uncontrolled coughing, and unusual eye and nasal discharge. Children must be symptom-free for at least 24 hours before returning. Children with lice must wait at least 1 week before returning.
In the event of an unforeseen problem, an incident report will be filled out. These may be filled out due to behavioral or parental issues and injuries. Parents/guardians may be required to sign and receive a copy for their own records.
If discipline is necessary then time time-outs will be used and if the child is uncooperative, then the parent will be called for. Intolerable behavior such as toy throwing, hitting, spitting, and refusal to listen to staff will be disciplined.
Parents/guardians are responsible for changing their child's diaper. Kids Care staff cannot do diaper changes or assist your child on the toilet. If your child wears diapers or has trouble going to the bathroom, you will be given a pager so you can be alerted when your child needs help. Please take your child to the bathroom or change their diaper before you drop them off.
We recommend leaving immediately after saying goodbye, especially if your child struggles with being left without you. Prolonged goodbyes and checking in on your child can make it harder for the child to see you go.
If your child is upset or crying uncontrollably for more than 15 minutes, the Kids Care staff will page or find you to calm them down. We cannot hold your child the whole time they are in Kids Care depending on the staff-to-kids ratio, you may be called to hold your child if that is the only way to console them.
All children are required to be fully clothed and have either socks and/or shoes to prevent the spread of bacteria and illness. If your child has frequent accidents, please bring a spare change of clothes.
Children are allowed to bring their own toys and snacks and we encourage parents to bring a diaper bag for babies. Please write names or label belongings so we can keep track of the children's things. If your child does not wish to share their toys, it may be better to not bring them. The Kids Care staff is not responsible for personal belongings and lost toys.
